AUCHTERE

About Autechre.
A redefinition of mixing, of composing, of building and structuring happens here, I've discovered them through their mesmerizing video of Gantz Graf, the thing had just left me knock-out, breathless. Something never seen before, something really new occured. Rythm with noise? That's not new. Industrial music, you mean? That's something else. No, no, the way they do it, they put it into rythms. Noise with music? Whatever.

Electronic convulsions, constructions, reconstructions, destructions, patterns, noise, sound waste, digested, a kitchen mixer, remixed with other shapes. With machinery, software quite experimental, as it seems.
The design is also impressive.

Seja o que for.

GANG OF FOUR

Not made by great men

There's a show on TV, makes headlines in newpapers, all part of a strategy, a dangerous one, the greatest men, you have to choose who was the greatest man of your country. It's creating passionate debates, ah, a cause! A lost one? And it's raising a stupid faschizoid nationalism among the people, especially when some of the names are truly fascist dictators or extreme rightists behaviours. I saw that in Holland, and now in Portugal. In the Netherlands, they wanted to elect Pim Fortuyn, that caricature assassinated by an extreme leftist, homo, racist, skinheaded figure, living with a blackman from Green Cap, extreme rightist, xenofobe, anti-muslim, and defensor of the family values. Getting sick here, I'm bouncing between one extreme and another. In Portugal, it´s the sacred name of the lost facist paradise that they want to recover, I´m falling off my chair with such bouncing.

There was a song a few years ago saying, it's not made by great man. I'm starting to agree with that since leaders are all gorgeous failures...
One of the most interesting name of this recent years, I mean truly capable to suscite feelings in one's person, like looking, or like laughing, in the good sense of the term, for being genuinely, a word that's disappeared, funny, at least at first sight, the Artic Monkeys, brought me, without noticing it, back to things like the Clash, or early things from the eighties, away from the flangers and chorus, may'be through their clean approach to the guitars. The Bloc Party also, although in a different way. What I want to say is that the sound is something we don't hear for years. No sampling, no rock, no blues, or American influences, or perhaps just a little, just that European sound, that continental flavor, lost to those 70's revivals and big rock gods that are recovered for a few years, since the mid 90's, I suppose.

Anthrax
He'd send in the army
Ether

The sound and construction brought me back to a thing called Gang of Four. A kind of atitude we don't see for a while, the politically and socially motivated bands like Au Pairs and to a certain extent the Fall, though on an other side of the fence. Which side? Yours, I suppose. Let´s remind we are constantly bombarded by american rap and clones or deviates, that's lost any identity in mud, since ... Puritans, he? Yeah, the cover with the V sign of Mark E. Smith, remember it?
Right, the Gang of Four and their topics that nobody else uses or talk about. I've rediscovered an atitude, a position in a way ofended and sick in front of the TV news, located on the oposite bank of the river, any kind of oposition, oposition to any social situation but not in a brutal way of protest, or social discontentment. It's more a categorical NO or NOT than a f... off. Sharp, raw, a sound with almost no production, contradicting, nowadays more than ever. Some bands can survive, others don't.
Damn rap orgies, I can´t get enough!

What We All Want

Havia uma música uns anos atrás que dizia, it´s not made great man, não foi feito por homens grandes.

Puritanos, he?

Gang Of Four - To Hell With Poverty (TV Live)

SOUTH PARK

Nota:
I was to include some links to YouYube to a few episodes but as is it stated on the site, all the episodes have been removed due to a Viacom copyrights claim. Too bad. Now, you really have to BUY!!!! the dvd’s. Nonetheless, just a few songs to lighten your day.

Well, excuse my French but South Park is something that has nothing to do with our beloved music, but due to the social and economical content of the thing, I'd like to include them in our prestigious gallery of celebreties. After consideration, it has a lot to do with. They are our favorite disgusting little monsters who will, I hope, someday, save the entire universe from all the evil and all the constant threats that live in our minds and our Tv's, ready to take over our rationality and our meals, I mean the crab people. Frank Zappa? Are you there? Please, knock twice if that is true!

Todd n Tyler (VH1 Classic)

A drilling machine to get to the stage? Killing all those hippies? Damn. I'm not Cartman, that's no possible.
Due to copyrights claimings, most of the videos were forbiden on YouTube, as with the Simpsons, we'll have to feed on the rests that still lay around. Hope they won't take them out that soon.

By the way, they've closed the PostPunkJunk blog, one of the best thing since those glorious eighties, because the growing number of visitors was overstressing the hosts servers, what about that!? Now you can't be a victim of your own success. Well, that's probably gay.
Anyway, get the South Park's Dvd's or whatever you use. They are too gorgeous.

Dragon Ball Z - It's Easy Mmmkay

Nota:

Ready for Halloween

Porra. Não sou o Cartman, não é possível.

Resident Evil 4 meets Big gay Al (South Park)

LEE PERRY - THE UPSETTERS

Scratch

The upsetter.
From Lee Perry, I´ve found a reedition of three of his early albums released under the name Dub-Tripych, and that includes Cloak and Dagger, Blackboard Jungle Dub, both from 1973, and Revolution Dub, 1975. I'll swap them someday for copies on vinyl. May'be things even earlier, from the Upsetters.

Panic In Babylon - Purity Rock
Soulfire
Dub revolution
Dub fire

That was the mad producer, dubbing hard, just before creating the Black Ark, the studio in his back yard, mixing names like Marley and the Wailers (check their first albums) and Max Romeo among others. Note that all the gear he used was pretty basic sound machinery, nonetheless that created a unique true Jamaican sound. Playing with cross-channel stereo, inserts of whatever he could find or whatever was at the hand, including samples from television or movies, his approach to production is something coming out of the usual boring international rules and patterns of recording and mixing, and further on, of morality and not to say respectable "sanity".
He says he burned his Black Ark in a moment of fury and rage.

Lee Perry & Mad Professor - Mad Man Dubwise

A short reggae documentary, in the Black Ark, like a lesson of "savoir faire". The ambience of the studio is something.

FUNKADELIC - PARLIAMENT

Ok, let´s talk about funk. As someone's just said, can't get enough of that funky stuff. Oh! Another says, play that funky music white boy, play it 'till the day you die. Ok, why not?
The afro-alien madness extravaganza of George Clinton and his fellows, all the science fiction cosmic funky stuff out of the mother ship, the comic strips completely spaced-out, straight to your face, white boy! Good mood! That's a groovy mood! A bass line that usually drive any regular mortal soul insane. How can they do that with those f... boots!? Gosh! They're not from this world, nor the other!?

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART

One of John Peel´s favorite and also of Frank Zappa´s, the true beefheart king back from the promise land.
Says the legend, I first met Beefheart in England, on John Peel's shows on BBC1, during my night shifts as a butcher. He played "Drop out Boogie". The next day, I ran like mad to the local record shop, and found myself a pair of bongos. By chance, I also got a copy of the "Magnetic Hands" by the Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. That's it! The magic took hold of me. They say Van Vliet answers the phone before it rings. Something similar happens to me: I can picture who's ringing before the bell rings. We probably have something in common.

From the Peel Sessions, a never released.
Recorded on the 24th January 1968:
London, Maida Vale. Studio 4. Production: Bernie Andrews. Engineering: Dave Tate, Bob Conduct.

E pronto, fiquei possesso. Algo semelhante costuma acontecer-me: consigo ver a pessoa antes que a campaínha toca.

Londres, Maida Vale. Studio 4. Produção: Bernie Andrews. Engenheiro: Dave Tate, Bob Conduct.

Two minutes of an interview:

McGrath: Tell me about your new album
Beefheart: The name of it is Lick My Decals Off...
Beefheart's Wife: No, it isn't...
Beefheart: Well, which one do you mean?
McGrath: The one you just mentioned...
Beefheart: Oh, the new one? It's called The Spotlight Kid.
McGrath:: No more decals?
Beefheart: You say "deck-alls" up here.
McGrath: And you say "dee-calls" down there...it's a bit different.
Beefheart: It slows it down a bit, but that doesn't matter. The words slow it down more than that.
McGrath: Is there any point in asking for a musical description of the new album? Is that possible, anyway?
Beefheart: No, I don't think there is any way to describe it. It's a little more accessible, I think. A lot more accessible.
Unknown Fan: Maybe you could ask him when he's going to work with Zappa again.
Beefheart: I'm not. No, I shouldn't have even worked with him when I did. Because I can't work. He works, I play. There's a difference. Are you talking about Willie The Pimp?
Fan: Yeah. Is that the only thing you've done with him?
Beefheart: Yeah.
McGrath: You didn't like it?
Beefheart: I didn't mind doing it it, but he turned my voice down so far it was almost corny. I really sang that thing. And it turned it way down. He didn't tell me it was going to be turned down like that, and when he put it on I thought it was humourous. He should have gotten Johnny Rivers.
Fan: Well, that's how he is, I guess.
Beefheart: How is he?
Fan: Pretty weird.
McGrath: Frank's not weird, he knows what he's doing.
Beefheart: Well, I think people who know what they're doing to that degree aren't doing very much.
McGrath: Yeah, I think I know what you mean.
Beefheart: That's what I mean.
