We were kids. I used to hang around at the fifth floor of the building in front. My friend had a black pickup with an iron stick in the middle of the plate, it turned around and it could take several LP’s, one on the top of each other. When the record stopped, the arm lifted up, and another felt down and the music didn’t stop. We had a few singles, 45 rpm that we bought with the changes of the bread. I had Atomic from Blondie and Boys keep swinging from David Bowie, the solo was real noise, done by R.Fripp and B.Eno, if I’m not wrong. He had One step Beyond from Madness, Bad Manners were cool, the Specials also were around. Gangsters, Rudy.

Éramos pequenos. Parava no quinto andar do prédio em frente. O meu amigo tinha um gira-discos preto com um ferro no meio do prato, que rodava e que dava para levar vários LPs, uns em cima dos outros. Quando um disco acabava, o braço levantava, outro caía e a música não parava. Tínhamos uns singles, 45 rotações que se compravam com os trocos do pão. Eu tinha o “Atomic” dos Blondie, o “Boys keep swinging” do David Bowie, o solo era um barulho, obra do R. Fripp e do B.Eno se não me engano. Ele tinha o “One step beyond” dos Madness, os “Bad Manners” eram o máximo, os Specials também andavam por lá. Gangsters, Rudy. Ská nevasse…

Night on Earth - Segment: Rome (Jim Jarmusch, 1991)


Better known for his movies, Jim Jarmusch was also musician in the beginning of the eighties, in a short career band, the Del-Byzanteens, which productions are quite rare to find. Nonetheless, I’ve found a lost video clip featuring John Lurie on the sax and Phil Kline on guitar.
I include here trailers of some of his movies, namely Stranger than Paradise, Coffee and Cigarettes, only to name those two. Gorgeously mad in a gorgeous black and white.
Jim Jarmusch also realized several clips for Tom Waits, both remarkable protagonists in their respective roles.

Mais conhecido pelos seus filmes, Jim Jarmusch também foi músico no início dos anos oitenta, numa banda que teve uma carreira bastante curta, os Del-Byzanteens, cujas produções são bastante difíceis de encontrar. De qualquer maneira, encontrei um clip perdido mostrando o John Lurie no saxo e o Phil Kline na guitarra.
Inclui aqui alguns excertos de alguns dos seus filmes, nomeadamente Stranger Than Paradise, Coffee and Cigarrettes, para só citar esses dois. Lindamente loucos num preto e branco de pedir por mais.
Jim Jarmusch também realizou alguns clips do Tom Waits, ambos protagonistas notáveis nos seus respectivos papeis.

A few vídeos from the MC5, a reference for a lot of people, especially people who talk of the beginnings of the Hard Rock or even Metal. Back to Comm lasts around ten minutes only, the presenter was not believing his eyes. Their live shows were mind blowing as you can see on the two live videos. Mind blowing was their career too which didn’t last long, political differences as it seems. Maybe excess of speed.

Uns vídeos dos MC5, referência de muita gente, especialmente de gente que fala dos primórdios do Hard Rock ou do metal. O do “Back to Comm” dura cerca de dez minutos apenas, o apresentador nem acreditava. As actuações eram de arrasar como o atestam os dois vídeos ao vivo. De arrasar também foi a carreira deles que não durou muito, divergências políticas ao que parece. Excesso de velocidade talvez.
