THE IMMORTAL LEE COUNTY KILLERS

Another band I've met on John Peel's programs, a few years ago, the Immortal Lee County Killers, the true holders of the Southern faith, an atitude and a sound that recovers a devilish blues rock and most of the time, possessed by the daemon himself. A tradition lost some time ago. Genuine, and why not, pure souls, in their interpretation of the root of the true South, meaning unconformist, and non-conformed, rebel ,and that certainly is looking for trouble.
With formations varying since the begining, the number of musicians oscillating between two and three, therefore the designations of ILCK II, ILCK III, and now as it seems the Immortal Lee County Killers OS.1 III. Hu...? Now, an operative system?
With keyboards, without keyboards, two (three) speedy cats who break reccords. Directly from the producer, from the deep fields of Alabama, a voice thought lost for long, the one of the delta's blues. A night in jail assured.

COCOROSIE

A beautiful thing thing that was on the Touch and Go's site, the same label than Big Black - we'll get there, beware - nonetheless a very lyrical thing, at least melodically, the Cocorosie. Heard it at first with Anthony and the Johnsons (well, may'be without the Johnsons), got back to them on their label's site. I don't do much into lyricism, not latelly. The last time was may'be with the Cocteau Twins, at least the two firsts album, or one EP and one LP. Got a bit bored with such heights after a while. The comparision stops here.
Harp and musical like in some mid afternoon nap dream. Don't know much about them, and I won't try to know, but it looks allright.

A comparação acaba aqui.

JAMES WHITE AND THE BLACKS

Another issue from New York's No Wave, the sax maniac himself, James Siegfried a.k.a. James Chance a.k.a. James White, the man with several identities, and with several bands, James Chance and the Contortions, James White and the Blacks, The Flaming Demonics between others. Started with Lydia Lunch in the Jesus and the Teenage Jerks, he went off to form the Contortions with a bunch of musicians which were to produce some of the most peculiar sounds of the early eighties.

Between free-jazz influences and his love for James Brown - James White and the Blacks - added to the punk ethics of nihilism and a few punches at the audience, his provocative attitude not without some gorgeous humour, naturally got punched back. The Contortions, the Blacks, or whatever, turns the ambience to something closely related to torid heatwaves in overcrowded neighbourhoods, in a significantly close picture of the city itself, in a blending of choking soul and mad sulfurous breath coming out through his damned sax, not to say his lyrics. Glad it has been reedited a few years ago.

The Contortions
