LEE PERRY - THE UPSETTERS

Scratch

The upsetter.
From Lee Perry, I´ve found a reedition of three of his early albums released under the name Dub-Tripych, and that includes Cloak and Dagger, Blackboard Jungle Dub, both from 1973, and Revolution Dub, 1975. I'll swap them someday for copies on vinyl. May'be things even earlier, from the Upsetters.

That was the mad producer, dubbing hard, just before creating the Black Ark, the studio in his back yard, mixing names like Marley and the Wailers (check their first albums) and Max Romeo among others. Note that all the gear he used was pretty basic sound machinery, nonetheless that created a unique true Jamaican sound. Playing with cross-channel stereo, inserts of whatever he could find or whatever was at the hand, including samples from television or movies, his approach to production is something coming out of the usual boring international rules and patterns of recording and mixing, and further on, of morality and not to say respectable "sanity".
He says he burned his Black Ark in a moment of fury and rage.

A short reggae documentary, in the Black Ark, like a lesson of "savoir faire". The ambience of the studio is something.
